Track Teams Win C-8 District Meet – Qualifies 18 Athletes for the State Meet

The Ord High School track and field teams brought home the championship plaques from
both the girls and boys C-8 district track meet last Thursday. The girls won the meet with 142
points and 18 points better than runner-up Grand Island Central Catholic (124) while the boys
finished first with 127 points and 49 points ahead of Nebraska Christian (78). “To say we had
a great district meet would be an understatement”, Coach Derry Trampe said. “Our kids did an
outstanding job competing on a hot and windy day. We had some of our best performances of
the season at the right time. We just need to ride that momentum into the state meet next week
and we can make some great things happen in Omaha.” It is believed that this is the first time
in the school’s history that both teams won a district title in the same year. “I am very proud of
our kids and what they were able to accomplish”, Trampe said. “What I am really pleased with
is that we had contributions from every area of our teams. That is a real credit to our kids and to
the assistant coaches we have. All of my assistants do an outstanding job of developing kids for
the end of the season and it really paid off for us in this meet.” Rounding out the team scoring
in the girls meet was: Cross County—65.5, St. Paul—53, Twin River—41, Ravenna—38.5,
Centura—32, and Nebraska Christian—31. Rounding out the team scoring in the boys meet
was: Grand Island Central Catholic—72, St. Paul—66, Ravenna—50, Cross County—49, Twin
River—48, and Centura—37.

Nine boys and nine girls qualified for the state meet that will be held in Omaha at Burke
Stadium this Friday and Saturday. Boys qualifying for the state meet are Flagan Petska in the
high jump and 4 X 800 relay; Johnny Ference in the shot put; Clayton Lange in the shot put;
Kamron Dawe in the pole vault; Geoff Foth in the 4 X 800 relay; Dylan Miller in the 4 X 800
relay and the 400 meter dash; Trevor Fahrenholz in the 4 X 800 relay; Derek Sintek in the 110
meter high hurdles and 300 meter intermediate hurdles; and Andrew Fields in the 3200 meter
run. ” We have a good number of boys competing in the state meet with the opportunity to bring
home medals from the meet”, Trampe said. “If we compete at our best we could score some
quality points at the state meet.” Girls qualifying for the state meet include Nicki Carson in the
high jump, 100 meter high hurdles, 300 meter low hurdles, and 4 X 400 relay; Kenzie Drudik in
the triple jump, 200 meter dash, and 4 X 400 relay; Kalie Pelton in the 400 meter dash and 4 X
400 relay; Katharina Most in the 800 meter run; Tori Beran in the 300 meter low hurdles and 4 X
100 relay; Sadie Arduser in the 4 X 100 relay, Sofia Hill in the 4 X 100 relay, Jerri Tuma in the
4 X 100 relay, and Melanie Ries in the 4 X 400 relay. “We have a great representation of girls
going to the state meet and a chance to place in a lot of events”, Trampe stated. “Hopefully we
will compete up to our potential and bring home a lot of medals from the meet.”

The girls won 7 of the 17 events in the meet to help bolster their team total. Nicki
Carson led the way with four gold medals on the day. Carson won the high jump with a jump of
5′ 1″, the 100-meter high hurdles in a school record time of 15.5, the 300-meter low hurdles in a
time of 47.6, and anchored the 4 x 400 relay team to a 4:09.0. “Nicki had as good of a day as
you can have”, Trampe said. “She is an outstanding athlete that has been a big part of our
success all season long.” Not to be outdone, Kenzie Drudik qualified for state in all three events
she competed in. Drudik finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 35′ 9.5″, won the 200-

meter dash in a time of 26.7, and was also on the 4 X 400 relay team. “Kenzie is an amazing
athlete who has overcome a lot of adversity to get to where she is right now”, Trampe noted. “I
am so proud of her and the courage she has shown this season. She is a tough competitor for us
and will be a big part of our teams in the future as well.” Another member of the 4 X 400 relay
team, Kalie Pelton, also added an individual gold in the 400- meter dash with a time of 62.0.
“Kalie is a tough competitor and runs with a lot of strength”, Trampe said. “I admire how hard
she works and how hard she competes.” The last gold medal won by the Chants went to the 4 X
100 relay team of Sadie Arduser, Tori Beran, Sofia Hill, and Jerri Tuma. The team tied the
school record with a season best time of 51.6 to punch their ticket to state. “Those four girls had
a great race”, Trampe stated. “Their exchanges were excellent and they ran like a group that was
not going to be denied a place at the state meet.” In addition to Drudik in the triple jump, two
other girls earned a trip to Omaha with second place finishes. Tori Beran qualified for the 300-
meter low hurdles in a time of 48.1 while Katharina Most qualified for the 800-meter run with a
time of 2:27.7. “Tori is a very talented athlete who ran the best race I have seen her run all
season”, Trampe said. “I was really happy that Katharina qualified for the state meet because
she is such a neat kid to have on the team. Her efforts this season have had a very positive
impact on our team.” Third place medals went to Sydney Kruml in the shot put (36′ 2.75″),
McKenna Sheldon in the pole vault (9′ 0″), Jerri Tuma in the 100-meter dash (13.0), and
Katherine Lansman in the 3200-meter run (13:19.4). “You really feel bad for the kids who finish
third because they just miss out on a trip to state”, Trampe said. “However, the effort of these
four girls was as much as we could ask for. All of them did as well as they could and,
unfortunately, they just came up short.” Fourth place medals went to the 4 X 800 relay team of
Katherine Lansman, Hanna Heil, Kristin Severence, and Katharina Most (10:32.0); Tori Beran in
the 100-meter high hurdles (16.8); Megan Davis in the 400-meter dash (66.9); and Jerri Tuma in
the 200-meter dash (27.4). Fifth place medals were won by Kalie Pelton in the 200-meter dash
(27.4), Hanna Heil in the 800-meter run (2:46.3), and Katherine Lansman in the 1600-meter run
(6:10.4). Sydney Kruml added a sixth place medal in the discus with a toss of 105′ 4″ while
Kristin Severence earned one in the 3200-meter run with a time of 13:56.2.

The boys had two district champions in the meet with Derek Sintek winning the 110-
meter high hurdles (15.7) and Andrew Fields winning the 3200-meter run in a time of 10:32.2.
“Both Derek and Andrew have scored a lot of points for us this season and they did the same
thing at this meet as well”, Trampe said. “Both of them have a good chance to bring home some
hardware from the state meet.” Silver medals and trips to state went to Flagan Petska in the high
jump (5′ 10″), Johnny Ference in the shot put (51′ 1″), Kamron Dawe in the pole vault (11′ 6″),
Dylan Miller in the 400-meter dash (53.4), and Derek Sintek in the 300-meter intermediate
hurdles (43.4). “I was really surprised and pleased with the efforts of Flagan in the high jump,
Johnny in the shot put, and Dylan in the 400″, Trampe said. “All three of them preformed way
better than they have all season. Johnny added 4 feet to his shot put, Flagan added 4 inches to
his high jump and Dylan took more than a full second off his time in the 400. You cannot ask
for more than that as a coach. Derek and Kamron competed well in their events and earned
themselves a trip to state.” The 4 X 400 relay team of Geoff Foth, Dylan Miller, Trevor
Fahrenholz, and Evan Petska also finished second with a season best time of 3:37.1 but did not
qualify for the state meet based on time. “Our 1600-meter relay ran a great race and I feel bad
that they did not qualify”, Trampe noted. “I especially felt bad for Evan because he has worked
hard for four years and was at the state meet last year.” Finishing third and also qualifying for

state by meeting the additional qualifying standards were Clayton Lange in the shot put (50′ 8″)
and the 4 X 800 relay team of Geoff Foth, Dylan Miller, Flagan Petska, and Trevor Fahrenholz
(8:28.3). “I am glad that Clayton made it in the shot put after he just missed the automatic mark
in the discus”, Trampe said. “I thought the 4 X 800 had a pretty good shot because they ran a
quality time but when you finish third you never know. I was very relieved when I saw the rest
of the district results that night.” Also finishing third were Dylon Smedra in the pole vault (11′
6″), Lathan Petska in the 3200-meter run (11:08.9), Geoff Foth in the 800-meter run (2:06.9),
Cole Svoboda in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (44.5), and Andrew Fields in the 1600-
meter run (4:52.5). Fourth place medals went to Evan Petska in the 400-meter dash (54.3),
Kamron Dawe in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (45.1), and the 4 X 100 relay team of Nick
Valla, Dylan Miller, Trevor Fahrenholz, and Derek Sintek (46.7). Fifth place medals were won
by Clayton Lange in the discus (141′ 2″) and Cole Svoboda in the triple jump (37′ 9.5″). Lathan
Petska added a sixth place medal in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:20.1.

STROMSBURG — The Ord track and field teams earned a clean sweep at the Class C, District 8 Meet.

The Chants used team efforts to capture district titles in both the boys and girls Thursday at Cross County High School.

The girls won seven events to take the team title with 142 points, 18 points more than runner-up Grand Island Central Catholic. The boys won only two events, but relied on its depth to capture their second-straight district title with 127 points, 49 points more than Nebraska Christian.

“It’s something we have wanted to do all year,” Ord coach Derry Trampe said. “We’ve been close in past meets so this was nice to have both teams win. This is great for our kids and I think they competed really well.”

The Ord girls qualified nine athletes to the state meet. Nicki Carson paced the Chants with four victories. She won the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch), 100 hurdles (15.5 seconds), 300 hurdles (47.5) and joined Kalie Pelton, Melanie Ries and Kenzie Drudik in the 1,600 relay (4:09.0).

In fact, Carson was close several times to not qualifying in the high jump. She cleared most of her heights on her final attempt.

“She just kept competing and competing in the high jump,” Trampe said. “You really can’t ask for much more than what she did today. She ran outstanding races in the hurdles and ran a good anchor on the 1,600 relay.”

Drudik won the 200 (26.7) and Pelton captured the 400 (1:02.0). Sadie Arduser, Tori Beran, Sofia Hill and Jerri Tuma teamed up to take the 400 relay (51.6).

“That relay team really came through and performed well,” Trampe said. “Our handoffs were good and everything in the race was excellent. It’s those little things that make a big difference and that’s what happened today.”

Andrew Fields captured the 3,200 (10:32.2) and Derek Sintek won the 110 hurdles (15.7) to lead the Ord boys. But it will take five other athletes to the state meet. The 1,600 relay has a chance to get in as well after finishing second (3:37.3), which will depend on other Class C district times.

“We got a lot of depth and I think that’s what makes a difference,” Trampe said. “Johnny Ference and Andrew Lange finished second and third in the shot put to qualify and Ethan Petska took second in the high jump, as well as Kamron Dawe in the pole vault and Dylan Miller in the 400.

“We had other kids step up, even though they weren’t state qualifiers, but still helped score team points. That really helped.”

The GICC girls took second with 124 points, while the boys finished third with 72 points.

The Crusader girls won three events and will take seven athletes to the state meet. They went 1-2 in the 1,600 with Brianna Wardyn winning (5:43.0) and Alli Masat taking second (5:43.2). Wardyn also captured the 3,200 (12:37.2), while Erin Sorahan won the long jump (16-6 1/4). The 400 relay has a chance to qualify after finishing second (52.3).

The GICC boys captured five events and will take six athletes to state. Tyler Barrientos and Riley Shoemaker each captured three events for the Crusaders. Barrientos won the 800 (2:02.8), while Shoemaker captured the 300 hurdles (41.1). Both joined Derrick Broekemeier and Michael McGowan in winning the 1,600 relay (3:32.0) and 3,200 relay (8:15.9).

Trevor Staab was the other winner for GICC, taking the pole vault (12-6).

“I couldn’t be any happier with how both teams competed today,” Crusader coach Keith Kester said. “I’m extremely pleased. Our boys scored about every point we hoped to score and got more and the same with the girls. We got a lot of kids to state and I’m extremely pleased with our kids today.”

The Ord High School track and field teams brought home two plaques from the Lou-Platte Conference track meet this past Thursday. In the meet held at Loup City, the girls ran away with the team title by scoring 165 points. Kearney Catholic was a distant second with 110 points while Wood River finished third with 70 points. “Our girls had an outstanding day”, Coach Derry Trampe commented. “We did better than I would have ever thought we could in this meet. I am very proud of our girls for their efforts especially when you consider how hot and humid the weather was.” The boys came as close to winning the title as you can and still finished second to Adams Central. The Patriots scored 109.5 points to just edge out the Chants (109). St. Paul was a distant third with 56 points. “We had a great day with our boys and just came up short”, Trampe said. “I was very proud of the effort our boys put forth in the meet because they were aware of how close the score was all day. When you lose by half a point it is easy to think of everything you could have done to make up the point. However, we did so many good things on the day to get us that close that trying to find more is really not that important. What is important is how hard our guys battled all day long.” Rounding out the team scoring for the girls was: Adams Central (55), Ravenna (37.5), St. Paul (31), Centura (20), Doniphan-Trumbull (15.5), Gibbon (12), and Loup City (11). Rounding out the team scoring for the boys was: Doniphan-Trumbull (50.5), Gibbon (43), Loup City (33), Wood River (33), Ravenna (30), Kearney Catholic (28), and Centura (25).

The boys brought home gold medals in 4 of the 17 events at the meet. Kamron Dawe won the pole vault with a personal best vault of 12′ 0″ while Derek Sintek won the 300-meter IH in a time of 43.1. The 4 X 400 relay team of Geoff Foth, Dylan Miller, Flagan Petska, and Evan Petska paced the field in a time of 3:38.9 and the 4 X 800 relay team also struck gold with a winning time of 8:38.8. Team members were Geoff Foth, Dylan Miller, Andrew Fields, and Trevor Fahrenholz. “It is always nice to have relays and individuals bring home a gold medal from the meet”, Trampe said. “These guys have been doing this a lot this season and hopefully we can have a few more at districts.” Silver medals went to Clayton Lange in the shot put (48′ 10″), Andrew Fields in the 3200 (10:10.9) and 1600 (4:49.1), Derek Sintek in the 110-meter HH (16.0), Geoff Foth in the 800 (2:07.2), and Kamron Dawe in the 300-meter IH (44.4). Dylon Smedra placed thid in the pole vault with a vault of 11′ 0″. Fourth place medals went to Evan Petska in the 400 (54.5) and Trevor Fahrenholz in the 800 (2:11.6). The 4 X 100 relay team of Nick Valla, Dylan Miller, Trevor Fahrenholz, and Derek Sintek finished fifth in a season-best time of 46.6. Sixth place medals went to Nick Valla in the long jump (19′ 1.5″), Johnny Ference in the shot put (46′ 6.5″), Dylan Miller in the 400 (54.9), Flagan Petska in the 800 (2:12.7), and Cole Svoboda in the 300-meter IH (45.4).

The girls brought home gold medals in 6 of the 17 events contested in the meet. Gold medals went to Nicki Carson in the 100-meter HH (16.0) and 300-meter LH (48.7), Katherine Lansman in the 1600 (5:53.0) and 3200 (12:31.5), Kenzie Drudik in the 200 (26.8), and the 4 X 400 relay team of Kalie Pelton, Melanie Ries, Kenzie Drudik, and Nicki Carson (4:14.7). “All of our girls really competed well but it is really neat for Katherine and Kenzie to win two gold medals on the day and for Nicki to bring home three”, Trampe said. “These girls had very good days and are just really strong competitors. I also thought that Kalie Pelton and Katharina Most had very good days for us as well.” Second place medals were won by McKenna Sheldon in the pole vault (persona best vault of 9′ 2″), Nicki Carson in the high jump (personal best jump of 5′ 1″), Kalie Pelton in the 400 (62.6), Jerri Tuma in the 100 (13.0), Katharina Most in the 800 (personal best time of 2:27.4), Tori Beran in the 300-meter LH (50.8), and the 4 X 800 relay team of Katherine Lansman, Hanna Heil, Kristin Severence, and Katharina Most (10:20.7). Third place medals went to Sydney Kruml in the shot put (personal best toss of 34′ 10″), Kenzie Drudik in the triple jump (persona best of 34′ 7.75″), Melanie Ries in the 400 (63.4), Tori Beran in the 100-meter HH (personal best of 16.7), Jerri Tuma in the 200 (personal best time of 27.3), and the 4 X 100 relay team of Sadie Arduser, Tori Beran, Sofia Hill, and Jerri Tuma (52.6). Fourth place medals were earned by Tiarra Kruml in the pole vault (7′ 6″) and Sadie Arduser in the long jump (15′ 7.25″). Fifth place awards went to Sadie Arduser in the 100 (13.6) and Kalie Pelton in the 200 (27.9). Megan Davis earned a sixth place medal in the long jump with a leap of 14′ 9.25″.

The teams will compete in the C-8 district meet this Thursday at Cross County High School.
The Ord High School track and field teams brought home more hardware for the season with their performances at the West Holt Invitational last Thursday. The girls brought home the first place trophy in the 8-team meet by scoring 162 points. Ainsworth was a distant second with 102 points. ”Our girls are a very talented and deep team”, Coach Derry Trampe said. ”We scored in every event and brought home multiple medals in several events including a sweep of the 200 meter dash.” The boys finished second with 103.5 points just 2.5 points behind meet champion West Holt (106). ”Our boys had another good day as well and just came up short of winning the team title”, Coach Trampe commented. ”We scored in nearly every event and had several personal best performances on the day. Like the girls, we scored in a lot of events and had a few events where we brought home multiple medals including a sweep of the shot put.” Rounding out the team scores in the girls division were: O’Neill (87), Valentine (48), Burwell (48), West Holt (38), Stuart (22), and North Central (20). Rounding out the team scores in the boys division were: O’Neill (84), Burwell (69.5), Valentine (55), Ainsworth (45), North Central (33), and Stuart (31).

The girls won 8 of the 17 scoring events in the meet with Katherine Lansman winning 3 gold medals and Kalie Pelton winning 2. Lansman won the 3200-meter run in a time of 12:32.1 and the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:51.8. She also teamed up with Hanna Heil, Kristin Severence, and Katharina Most to win the 3200-meter relay in a time of 10:29.4. Pelton won the 400-meter dash in a time of 62. 9 and also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.8. She teamed up with Melanie Ries, Katharina Most, and Nicki Carson to win the 1600-meter relay in a time of 4:16.8. ”We had several girls who had great performances but Katherine, Kalie, and Katharina had very good days”, Coach Trampe stated. ”They all posted some of their best times of the season and are very valuable to the success of our relays. It is nice to have the kind of depth we do and the number of girls we have that can win events.” Also winning gold medals were Sadie Arduser in the long jump (15′ 4.5″), Kenzie Drudik in the triple jump (34′ 3.5″), and Jerri Tuma in the 200-meter dash (27.8). ”Sadie won the long jump for the second straight meet and she is really becoming a consistent performer for us”, Trampe said. ”Kenzie had another good day jumping and she also added a 2nd and 3rd place medal on the day. Jerri continues to get stronger every week and is really having a good season right now.” In addition to the second place finish by Pelton in the 200, the Chants had six other girls finish second in an event. Second place medals went to McKenna Sheldon in the pole vault (8′ 6″), Nicki Carson in the high jump (4′ 10″) and 300-meter LH (48.4), Kenzie Drudik in the 400-meter dash (63.5), Katharina Most in the 800-meter run (2:31.7), and the 4 X 100 relay team of Sadie Arduser, Tori Beran, Sofia Hill, and Jerri Tuma (53.1). Kenzie Drudik finished 3rd in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.9. The freshman 4 X 100 relay team of Megan Davis, Star Vera, Hanna Heil, and Andi Shellhase also finished third in a time of 59.3. Fourth place medals went to Megan Davis in the long jump (13′ 10″) and Jerri Tuma in the 100-meter dash (13.6). Fifth place medals were won by Sydney Kruml in the shot put (33′ 0″), Nicki Carson in the 100-meter HH (16.9), and Sadie Arduser in the 100-meter dash (13.8). Sixth place medals were won by Sydney Kruml in the discus (94′ 8″), Kristin Severence in the 3200-meter run (13:34.8) and 1600-meter run (6:22.4), Tori Beran in the 100-meter HH (17.2) and 300-meter LH (50.1), and Hanna Heil in the 800-meter run (2:46.2).

The boys won three events on the day and placed two or more athletes in 6 of the 17 scoring events. Bringing home gold medals for the boys were Clayton Lange in the shot put (48′ 6″), Andrew Fields in the 3200-meter run (10:15.7), and the 4 X 800 relay team of Trevor Fahrenholz, Dyland Miller, Flagan Petska, and Geoff Foth (8:47.3). ”Clayton is having a very solid year and continues to score a lot of points for us”, Trampe said. ”Andrew is another guy who is just very consistent every week and he is running really well right now and I think is ready to drop a lot of time off in his 3200. I am very happy with how our 3200 relay has pretty much dominated this season. However, we need to have somebody to race against so we can bring that time down as well.” Second place medals went to Johnny Ference in the shot put (47′ 3″), Clayton Lange in the discus (129′ 9″), Andrew Fields in the 1600-meter run (4:56.1), and the 4 X 100 weight relay team of Johnny Ference, Efrain Gallegos, Devin Cronk, and Clayton Lange (51.4). Third place medals were won by Devin Cronk in the shot put (47′ 0″), Nick Valla in the long jump (19′ 2.75″), and Derek Sintek in the 110-meter HH (15.9). Fourth place medals went to Devin Cronk in the discus (117′ 10″), Dylon Smedra in the pole vault (11′ 0″), Lathan Petska in the 3200-meter run (10:52.6), Derek Sintek in the 300-meter IH (43.5), and the freshman 4 X 100 relay team of John Radil, Clint Kruml, Clinton O’Neel, and Devon Vancura (56.6). Fifth place medals were won by Flagan Petska in the high jump (5′ 4″), Cole Svoboda in the triple jump (37′ 0.75″), Evan Petska in the 400-meter dash (54.2), Kamron Dawe in the 300-meter IH (44.2), the 4 X 100 relay team of Nick Valla, Dylan Miller, Trevor Fahrenholz, and Derek Sintek (47.4), and the 4 X 400 relay team of Geoff Foth, Dylan Miller, Trevor Fahrenholz, and Evan Petska (3:39.0). Sixth place awards went to Kamron Dawe in the pole vault (10′ 0″), Dylan Miller in the 400-meter dash (55.4), Geoff Foth in the 800-meter run (2:10.4), Evan Petska in the 200-meter dash (24.3).

The track teams will host their own invitational this Friday, April 27 beginning at 3:00 pm. ”I am excited about the opportunity to compete at home”, Coach Trampe said. ”It is nice for our kids to not have to travel and it is a great opportunity for our fans to come out and see what type of team we have.” Field events are slated to start at 3:00 pm along with the 3200-meter relay. The remaining running events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. Teams slated to compete in the meet include Adams Central, Central City, Grand Island Central Catholic, Kearney Catholic, Loup City, Ord, and St. Paul.
